Reading for pleasure

Our greatest goal in the Library is to make sure that every child leaves Hazlegrove with a genuine love of reading. We make it a mission to make sure that each child is reading a book that they are enjoying. Even the most reluctant reader cannot help but be drawn into our book culture because we really do love reading, and we share our enthusiasm with everybody.

We run all sorts of reading challenges, including our Word Count Challenges pitting class against class. Every Autumn Term we run a Millionaires’ Club, and every child who reads a million words over the term gets an invitation to a very exclusive lunch with real champagne glasses filled with fizzy Ribena with a strawberry floating at the top, and all sorts of mouthwatering canapés and delicious cuisine. If we reach our whole school word count target, then everyone has Millionaires’ Shortbread and hot Ribena at break time to celebrate.

We have certificates for reaching reading targets, special whole year word count bookmarks for each child and all sorts of other rewards.
